server problems

I hope this is in the correct category!

My site is currently on a managed dedicated server and the spec is as follows-

AMD Athlon 64 3,000+
1,024 MB DDR RAM
2x80 GB hard drive (RAID1)

100 MBit data transfer speed as standard. For 100 simultaneous full website views of a typical 100 kByte website it will take 1 second, on a normal 10mbit connection it will take 10 seconds.


In the last few months the site has been unavailable on a few occassions.

One of these occassions I complained and received a free months hosting, worth £80

Yesterday I was on my site and there was about 250-350 members in the forum, when it started to go really slow. Then none of the pages could be displayed, but there was no error messages.

One of my mods says he could ping the site

I could not get on and so called my hosts, who could not fix it and had to escalate the ticket. Half an hour later and my site was still not available and so I called them back and then it was back online in about 15mins.

The first guy I spoke to mentioned apache has crashed

I am wondering if there is anything I can do about this?

I am currently with 1and1, and they have some much better servers now. For an extra £10 per month I can upgrade to -

Dual Core AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
cpu- 2 x 2.2 GHz
memory- 2 GB DDR
hard drives- 2 x 250 GB


They will move all data accross to the new server, including emails etc.

But they will not move the mysql databases

I can't understand why they will not move these databases?

I would of thought that it would be easy for them to do as there are only 4 of them.

I would rather not move hosts as many charge for bandwidth and do not have 100mbit connections.

any advice is most welcome.

yeh they dont like moving sql databases though I think it might be an access thing. it only takes a few minutes to move them though.
When I moved servers (with the same host) I moved the files myself because there's no guarantee they'll do it right!! I dont like people messing with my files!

I just can't get my head around this

They will move the sites from my old server to the new server, but the forum,directory and arcade will still continue to use the mysql databases that they do currently until they are moved

I remember when I moved over to 1and1 from Lycos and it was difficult because you could not name the databases what you wanted to, you had to have the name that they gave you and so it had to be changed in the config.php file.

yeh you'll have to rename the databases but it shouldn't take long - I always use a server move as an excuse to get rid of useless DB things and clear out files

Moving the database is quite easy. If you are not comfortable with using SSH then use graphical database dump tool like one built into your forum or PHPMyadmin to do a dump of the database and move it across to the new server.
What you call a database is now important as long as you change the new name in the script that use the database.

In the meantime, it Apache gets over loaded (usually because your users are not login of properly because the hardware you described should come with up to 500 members easily) you should just restart it without rebooting the server.
You can set up a service that monitors apache and send you a message when it hangs on the server.

The problem is that the server is a managed dedicated one and so I have to get my hosts to do it, even then the last time I called they could not do it and had to call someone else to do it.

I don't even have a restart button for the server in my control panel.

I just thought I would let everyone know that I have found a webhost that seems reliable and they do free migrations and will move my sites for me

I have a business root server with one and one for my latest project-

The other week this site was running slow and so I restarted the server, then waited 10 mins and nothing happened after 30 mins I called 1and1 support and they submitted a ticket. After three hours I was mad and so called them back- they had submitted the ticket for the wrong server despite me telling them it was not the managed one! so my site was off line for over 3 hours.

I then found a host that specialises in youtube type script hosting-

iNFRENION.com : UK Dedicated server,Cheap Dedicated Server Hosting,Business Dedicated Hosting,FFMpeg Dedicated Hosting,Fully Managed Dedicated Server,Cpanel Dedicated Server,Linux Dedicated Hosting,Windows Dedicated Hosting,YouTube Dedicated Server

and so I had a chat with them and they seem to know what they are doing. They are now migrating my .org site to the new server and it should be ready soon.

If they proove reliable and their service is good I will then get them to move my main site and databases to their servers
