Right, but what if those ugly sites have been around for 6 years and continue to multiply, mirroring this same ugliness, as well as profitability?

LOL

we have to come forward to unmask those ugly sites with some daring ideas.

As daring ideas are like chessman moved forward, they may be beaten but they might starts a winning game for our favour.

I have two UGLY client sites that are making them a mountain. Are we going to upgrade them? are we hell as like, they are working and working well. Nothing but NOTHING is going to convince me to make changes.

One of these 'ugly' sites went online march 97.

Ok then, but you go convince my client to risk his £30,000 income per week from this ugly site by making some 'daring ideas'. Sorry etech, but on this one i disagree with you.

If your client is earning £30,000 income per week and that site is existing from last 6 years, then I dont consider it an ugly site, they might have some daring ideas.

On what basis you evaluate a site?

We are a web hosting company in Devon (based in Exeter) and are happy to discuss and advise the best, cheapest & customised web site hosting package for you
- .NET not necessary.
- Microsoft SQL not necessary.
- Web site stats is usually a feature of many control panels but isn't a priority, I get stats with phpnuke.
- Load balancind is definately required as is redundant connectivity.
- I don't offer webmail, e-mail or any other services through my sites and likely never will. I know it's a nice feature that I may enable one day for staff members only or as part of a tiered membership program but not for now.

My e-mail address is sirapnek@shaw.ca, if you want to talk specifics and discuss a package then my ears are open.

I'm in agreement with Paul_KY and OWG, you don't need to have a professional looking website, you just need a good product and/or a good sales copy/unique selling point.

That's not totally correct Duke, you are selling the site as a friendly and safe place for people to come and share while recieving support without being harrassed. That's a pretty important thing to be selling in this day and age, and yes, you do have to sell the idea to people as well as prove it to them before they'll sign up. But at the same time, you've made it look awesome!
