If your Joomla site gets popular you are going to need more resources to run it especially if you are doing lots of URL writing. I have been struggling to improve the performance of one of my Joomla sites.

Wordpress is okay for blogs but not for websites.

joomla is excellent if you would like to develop something more than just a website with articles - maybe an auto market, a gallery or an online shop.

I disagree you can create a simple website with wordpress easily - wordpress is just a lightweight publishing tool.

Joomla is more heavy weight and function rich as you state.

i'll go for wordpress. choose a SEO structured theme, the necessary plugins and you're done.

I have a couple of joomla sites and a couple dozen wordpress ones, I have found WP does very well SEO-wise. Granted I have not spent much time on the Joomla ones but I just fine WP easier to work with in general.
