No. Out-of-the-box vB is not at all heavy on server.
As Res. said earlier, It's when you start adding a lot of mods, things start to slow down.

vB is the way to go! Does not eat up alot of resources, tons of hacks/mods you can add to it, easy to manage, and most definitely worth the money.
