Default Runner dies after London Marathon

A 22-year-old runner who was taken ill after completing the London Marathon has died, race organisers have said.

They said the man died in hospital and offered their "deepest sympathy and condolences" to his family and friends.

A second runner who was in a critical condition overnight has now stabilised but is still in hospital.

St. John Ambulance said of the 5,032 people it treated, 73 went to hospital as runners battled 21C temperatures at midday, equalling the 1996 record.

The St. John Ambulance first aid charity provided some 1,400 volunteers, 50 ambulances and 59 treatment centres for the race.

Ummm , it`s a bit confusing for me , I can`t understand why some people try so hard to win this marathon , I think it`s more about participating to it than winning it.

One should be fit to run a Marathan.

My heart goes out to the families who have lost their loved ones in these Marathons.

Exercise yes, but that distance isn`t for me.

Can it really be worth it, 73 having to go to hospital, in what aren`t exactly super high temperatures.

There was a big campaign to alert runners to the danger because of the unseasonally warm temprature

The campaign was all over the news.

I agree it's the warm temperature but one must also be healthy and fit to run. Some people who run the Marathon have never ran before. This is very dangerous.

A lot of the runners did not consider the temperatures at 21C midday...

A few facts:

Quote:
Only those deaths, or collapses leading to deaths, that occur during the Marathon or within the finish area of the race, are considered Marathon deaths.

Seven cardiac deaths have been reported in the London Marathon: five from severe coronary heart disease – in 1991, 1994, 1995 1997 and 2003 – and two with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM, a chronic disorder affecting the heart muscle) – in 1990 and 2001.

Five successful cardiac resuscitations have taken place (in 1983, 1988, 1990, 1997 and 1998); all patients had coronary heart disease and were subsequently discharged from hospital.

In the millennium race, a young man collapsed at the finish complaining of neck pain and died the following day in hospital following a diagnosis of subarachnoid (brain) haemorrhage.

The overall mortality rate from the 20 years is one in 67,414, or roughly one death for every two million miles run.
What the finding dont tell us is the health of those that died before they took part. We need to remember that many taking part are recovering from an illness and take part either to try to prove a point or to raise funds for a hospitals etc that assisted them through a recent illness, A survey of runners and charities revealed that more than 75% of participants in the 2002 Marathon were raising money for charity.

deaths of 1 in 67,414 is in reality comparable to many daily activities, sad it may be but in to be expected when you work out the averages.
