Default MX Logic Reports Fall in CAN-SPAM Compliance

MX Logic, Inc., a provider of email defense solutions, today issued its monthly statistics on corporate email security, which stated that based on a sample of 1.2 million spam messages, 13% of spammers still leverage on email authentication schemes, Sender ID and Sender Policy Framework (SPF), slightly down from 16% which was reported in September 2004.

Sender ID and SPF help prevent domain 'spoofing' in email and make it easier to identify fraudulent email scams and 'phishing' attacks by authenticating the origin of an email. Email domain owners identify their 'legitimate' sending mail servers by publishing a Sender ID/SPF record in the domain name system (DNS). This enables email servers to validate the source of incoming email against the associated Sender ID/SPF record to determine if the email sender's domain is legitimate and not 'spoofed'.

The statistics also reveal that on an average, spam sent through Zombie PCs accounted for 51 percent of all spam. Despite recent high-profile enforcement action, CAN-SPAM compliance dropped to 5 percent in January, down from an all-time high of 7 percent compliance in December 2004.

"While the recent wave of CAN-SPAM enforcement is encouraging, its effects have yet to be reflected in the compliance numbers. While it is important that law-enforcement agencies and ISPs continue to use the CAN-SPAM Act to shut down spam operations, the law must be bolstered by robust technology solutions, end-user education, and continued industry cooperation to improve identity and security protocols in email," said Chasin, CTO, MX Logic.
