forum posting and directory submission in my oppinion are the most effective methods of promoting a site. And , I think, article submission is another good way to promote.

1. Directory submission (fast way to gather back links)
2. Press releases (fast way to promot product or service)
3. Article submission (relavant links can not be better than article sites)
4. Word of mouth (this can make you overnight millionaire )
5. Forum Posting (another way of grabbing links or attention)
6. Blogging (huge volume is required to get desired results)
7. Link exchange (may be you are listing your compition)
8. Free advert website (you are lucky if you get something with this)
9. web ring (mostly irrelavant linking)

You order of the important is not bad. You are righ about word of mouth but its very very difficult to get significant referral from word of mouth

I think the affiliate is left out.
Thats a very good way to get some new submissions.

And makes the referral a lot easier.
