I would also say its a nice simple way for google to see whos selling links !!

Its fine if you are building sites to sell links and then to throw them away once google has hit you with a large stick but if you want the site to keep growing and getting good placements in serps then publicly selling links is not a good idea.

but if your site is PR0 with no traffic and no serps then it might be worth a quick punt

Agreed, for an established website selling links is something that webmasters need to think twice about unless you don't care about PR.
