Default Questions about backlinks

On the subject of links I have a couple of questions.

If a site gets a good backlink to a subpage, rather than Home Page, from another site, is that more beneficial than only having la link to the Home Page?

If a site gets more than one backlink from the same site, say one to its Home Page and another to a subpage, is that good, or is only one ever counted anyway, so any additional links are wasted?

Think appropriateness. A good word that I just made up.

If the link from a page in the refering site that is on topic (or near enough) with the sub page in your site, then it is quite advantageous. If somewhere else within the refering site, possibly a more generalised page (but still on theme with your site) links to your Home Page then that is also fine.

It is very desirable to make sure the actual Link Text is appropriate for the context of both refering and recieving pages.

So if I`m reading it right, as long as a link is relevant it is good to have more than one link from the one site to yours pointing to various pages.

Relevancy of the theme(same as your topic) is what matters a lot for good back links and more beneficial.

Here is a clue. NOTE THE DATE I POSTED THIS .

It is taken from another HIGHLY respected SEO forum where I am a founder member and moderator. I will not link to it as it is bad form.

Good question. I tend not to just have links on a link page anyhow. I always try to have a small write up about the site being linked to. I feel this gives better immediate content for the link in regard the search engines, and so ensures it is an on topic link.
You should always link from and to the most complimentry pages.
I added bolding , they are not in the original post.

Not much has changed from that fundamental principal OWg.

The main change has been the pursuit of links, links and more links because a link is a link is a link. Well contrived out of context off topic links will not help much (if at all) and may well handicap a sites performance.

Smea, I know that, YOU know that, but some just will not listen or claim 'it's too hard' (to get on topic links). Well unfotunately no-one said it was easy
