Default Graphic Designs

Graphics, when used effectively, can cause user interest. If you don't
use graphics, for either a minimalist look, or just because you feel
images are a distraction - can you give reasons why?

Although images can be a clutter to a site, and if used for navigation
purposes, can cause accessibility issues - effective use will give you
a great looking site. After all, the web is a visual medium for the most
part, and you only have once chance to make your first impression on
your readers.

So:
  • Do you use graphics as navigation?
  • Do you use graphics as eye-candy only?
  • Do you not use graphics at all?
  • Do you design your graphics yourself?

1) No, as of yet I have not mastered the css of rollover images and valid xhtml...working on it though.
2) I like to use graphics to help sell the story. I come from a printing background and find that when there are no graphics to a piece, it reads like the wall street journal. Now provided, if the client requests no graphics, then no graphics..
3) I feel like graphics and to the page, keeps the reader interested a little more and adds that extra touch.
4) yes...I try to adhere to copyright laws and understand that as a designer and advertising agency, the importance is original work. You can use a piece for inspiration and what not. I think nowadays though, the art of doing your own graphics is getting lost in our "quick turnaround" way of thinking.
4a) I even try to hand draw my artwork on my new toy.... a graphic tablet....

    Pretty much - doesn't everyone?
  • Do you not use graphics at all? Of course I do.

Do you use graphics as navigation? Nope, There's nothing wrong with using graphics as navigation, but I want my site more user friendly, and yes, i think that if there's too much graphics everywhere as navigation it does annoy the views. However, if your page layout permits you to, then that's alright. As long as it goes with the overall look.
Do you use graphics as eye-candy only? I do use it as eye candy.
Do you not use graphics at all? Yeap, i'm in love with graphics
Do you design your graphics yourself? Yeap I do design graphics by myself, but I'm not good at animation as of now. I use photoshop, like everybody else.

I'm getting a graphics tablet laptop soon! Can't wait!
