I don't know more about this. But my practise shows that when you submiting sitemap to google, it index faster and more accurate.

I have a new website and was all prepared to submit a sitemap to Google when an acquaintance who is a website designer mentioned that submitting a sitemap can actually reduce the number of pages indexed by Google. Currently, Google only has around 5% of my site's pages indexed. Has anyone here had experience of this problem after submitting a sitemap to Google?

You have to make sure that your sitemap.xml has all the pages that you have.
