I agree with the above posters that Adsense generates a fraction of the revenue that could be generated through direct advertising.

Having said that Adsense is great for zero effort revenue. I have a few sites that I haven't touched for months or even years but I am still earning my Adsense revenue.

Right, you should serve advertising. There is a great many of systems. For example, take a look at SmartPPC EVO (smartppcevo.com).
You can attract your own advertisers who will register on your site, and pay you directly for publishing ads. You as administrator can set CPM, Flat Rate, CPC prices.
Google AdSense can be an additional ads source: the system will display ads of google (or some other javascript-feed you have) if there are no roper ads from your advertisers.
XML feeds can be integrated also.
Check the system demo and guides to make sure how clear and easy-to use it is.
