I got a spam at link slinky blog today and I was quite pleased. Not about the spam but what it meant.

I have been promoting link slinky a lot lately and I installed word press a few days ago, this spam just mean that my promotion is working. Usually when spammers can find you on the net, it means other people can find you as well .

I know that i must forget it very quickly, but it is not an easy issue. Spaming is a very interesting way of promotion. Unfortunately I also did it several times (years ago), but for my new sites i don't want to have any spamming backlinks. Some weeks ago i checked the links of one of my competitor's site and i found some really very strange comment spam. Since then i know that he is not a competitor for me.

Yes, I think its a sign of maturity when one uses exclusively white hat SEO techniques but the problem is that definition of spamming varies depending on who you are talking to so one needs to use a tactics that goes with one's conscience.

That is very true.
As i know the spam means stupid pointless annoying message. I think the point is the annoying in this expression.

You are right, annoying is the operating word as ell as unsolicited, cheap, tacky and other not so good words about spam and spammers

But what are you supposed to do if a Viagra site submits to your directory as a reciprocal link. You reject the submissions, but the Viagra site does not remove the back link?

Google, Yahoo etc are on lot and lots of spamming sites

I hope the developer of the search engines has already solved this problem. As far as i know theoretically a backlink from a spamming website won't hurt the rankings.

I read about the google bowling technique, but i think the developers have to protect the searcher's and the website owners interest as well, so there should be some kind of protection mechanism against this negative seo.
