I too agree it's a good idea but I have yet to see someone who actually lives up to their end of the bargain in this post exchange.

You may want to consider using a script such as info wizard, at least as soon as the link partner remove your link you know and you remove his link from your site too.
Its disappointing how some people do not honour their link exchange promise.
