New Site, default page view?

I'm a complete beginner. My site shows the index of the public directory. I placed a simple html "coming soon" page in the same directory, but don't know how to get the page to display instead of the directory. Help?

I asked the web host company, but they said they are administrators, not web designers. They logically expect that I would have more knowledge, but I don't yet. I'm reading, but if someone could please answer this one question, I don't want people looking at my site index.

What did you call your coming soon page? some seververs you need to call your page index.html or index.htm for it to display properly.
