Looks like there is no stopping Google now, it wants to poke its finger in every possible pie: payment gateway, domain name registration, web hosting to mention just a few. I am not a business guru, but does businessmen and webmaster out there think this is the right direction for Google or indeed to go?

Diversification is prolly the smartest thing Google can do IMHO, what better way to strengthen themselves to be the premier "one stop shop" on the net?
But don't you think a company should be focused? If you have too different services your run the risk of your core services not being as cutting edge as it possible can be

Temi, I understand very welll your point of view, but I think what you say can be applied for the small companies etc. But a big company like Google can create different division without problem. For example look at HP or Microsoft.

Businesses like Google don't like to stay focused. They operate in an industry where their main businesses can be invaded anytime and that is already happening with the likes of MSN, Yahoo venturing into Search engines territory. So I think it makes business sense for them to launch other ventures like Google News, Google Local, Gmail, Froogle, Google Image Search, Blogger etc. I remember when Netscape launched some years back, they were the best thing to happen to the web browser industry until Microsoft came along with a free web browser Internet Explorer. And that signalled the end of Netscape really. The big players have the money so they can launch as many ventures as possible.
Infojungle, Ovi,
I think you both have a good point, I think you can apply the same argument to Yahoo, the have hosting, free email etc etc so it its good enough for Microsoft and Yahoo its good enough for Google I suppose.

I know what your saying but I don't really believe google has ever focused on anything other than being the number one all around site on the net. Now that they have the resources they can do pretty much whatever they want and most of us will follow them to our deaths like a bunch of stupid lemmings.Originally Posted by temi
