I saw the below earlier I can't help but notice that Wales is missing as well as NI. As there are so many Welsh here I was wondering if tthey had thought about a campaign, or is there on already. Or are they happy to use .ws

English patriotism goes online
An online petition began on April 23rd 2008 to establish the .eng domain along side its more familiar counterpart
.co.uk.
Most countries around the world have their own country specific domain suffix, and England currently exists with just
co.uk. English patriots, however, have now initiated a campaign to open up the .eng domain through an online petition
and are looking for approximately 10,000 signatures which will be presented before ICANN in 2009. ICANN is the
organisation responsible for allocating domain names.

Scotland seeks independence in cyberspace
The Scottish National Party lodged a formal request with ICANN to enable Scottish business to change company
domains from .co.uk to .sco. The appeal follows the awarding of local suffixes to Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of
Man.
Most Scottish government departments and agencies would be expected to change their website suffixes
immediately. However, there would be no obligation on the part of other Scottish organisations or businesses to
change their internet address.
Supporters of the idea deny it would cause unnecessary confusion because users keying in the old .co.uk addresses
would be automatically redirected to the new .sco domains.

I think all this fragmentation is not in the interest of UK businesses. I wonder if I am less nationalistic because I am a naturalised Brit rather than born English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish.

Good point Temi, where are you from? I know some people who have been through the ceremony recently and it is all about being British.

I have been hear for a looooong time, did not have to do all those silly ceremony back then. I was from Nigeria originally.

We have been campaigning for years and are close to getting the domain for Wales. Originally it was going to be .cy , but cyprus got it.

I hope you never get it, its pointless. .co.uk is more than adequate for the whole of UK.

Why is any TLD more pointless than any other? Personally, I'd prefer to see a freeing up of TLD's - they are rarely implemented correctly. There are loads of .tv sites that are television related rather than to the country Tuvalu. Even this site - it's a .com but as a UK site shouldn't it be .co.uk?

But Temi, Wales is a country, UK is NOT a country Uk is an area. what you are saying is like saying that .eu is enough, and no countries within Europe should have their on country specific domain. keep in mind that Wales is a country, It has the oldest traceable british history, and the oldest language in Europe. it is also the ONLY ethinc languae in the world that is growing in use. Without our own domain name it means tht there are Welsh language sites on English language domains
