I with Joomla and the sef component i use, if someone clicks on a pages that no longer excisits they get redirected to the home page instead of a 404 error, how can i make this do this on other sites ? like a vb forum ? i know it something i have to put in the .htaccess but im not sure what ?

insert this line into the .htaccess

ErrorDocument 404 /

it will redirect the 404 server responses to the home page if you would like to create a custom error page you may want to use this

ErrorDocument 404 /customerrorpage.html

thanks for that bagi, i see this as a quick fix while google reindex all of my new forum url's etc. most traffic come from the main site urls and not long tail keywords at the moment (which is a reason for change) so it shouldnt affect it too much.
