I woiuld have to disagree with that definition of black hat white hat. There are 3 hats, black, white and Grey.

White hats do what is best for the client and what is best business practice, they also ensure they NEVER put the client site at risk.

Grey hats will push the envelope, they will tell the client the risks and break the rules, they will set up false links by using shallow directories for backlinking resons, will use methods, that while not likely to get you banned, are not best business practices.

Black hats will do whatever it takes to get the site where they want it. This includes domain hijacking, cloaking, removal of opposition sites by content cloaking and PR manipulation, disabling opponents adwords campaigns by again ad manipulation. A true black hat does not care if he loses a domain, as he has this built into his plan, he just replaces the dead domain with another he has ready.

OWG could you maybe tell me what sort of sites use what sort of hat ( why hat btw? ) thanks.

All sorts of sites use all sorts of different methods, although the tru black hats will work in Pills, Porn Casinos (Real PPC as it was jokingly referred to by Oilman).

The hat reference is a traditional one where say you are a parent and say a policeman, and your child does something wrong, then traditionally you might say " as a policeman I would just warn him, but with my parent hat on etc etc" It is just a traditional way of staing how you are commenting. Another example is when something happens on my forum, you have one view as a member and another as a moderator.admin. (different hats).
