Default sitemap.php and sitemap.xml ??
I am not really sure how Google or other search engines look at this but I have to sitemap files, one is sitemap.xml which is what I submit to Google and I also have sitemap.php which I use for visitors.

Should those two files have exactly the same number of links to your pages?
