I think checking every day is a bit too much, weekly sounds more reasonable to me
In the former company I worked for, we check the rankings of the sites we handle every single day. Is this a really good practice or is once a week fine? Aren't we becoming too obsessed with rankings by checking it everyday?

I only check rankings when there is a shift in traffic/conversions on a site. Until that point they are irrelevant. I also check rankings when I notice phrases in the server stats. I need to know where we are for that phrase to see if it can be improved to gain more traffic. Once I have checked it I more or less forget about it.
I run ranking reports for clients, but that is more for their benefit than my own, as I gauge my succes/failure on traffic, conversions and earnings for the customer.
