Default Browsing at Google

Browsing at Google? I wait for your opinions about this article:

"Now that Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) IPO has come and gone, with differing opinions of the relative success of the Dutch auction model, it's been relatively quiet over at the search engine's Mountain View, Calif., offices. Speculation, though, has been mounting over what Google may ultimately become. Fool contributor David Meier suggested it should become more like a portal.
Right now, the heady speculation seems to be coalescing around the idea of a Google Web browser.
To back up that idea, note that the company held a Mozilla Development Day on its campus, where programmers spent the day improving the renamed Netscape browser. The theory goes that building a new browser from the ground up might be unproductive, while adding to an already existing platform -- the open-source Mozilla, for example -- would be a huge kick-start.
Google's recent hiring spree is another sign that the company is moving to challenge Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Internet Explorer superiority. Google snagged one of the main developers of Java, the Internet programming language, from Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW); it brought on the lead developer of Avalon, the next-generation user interface for Internet Explorer; and it hired a few people who have been working on Internet Explorer itself.
Google has already added a number of enhancements to its search engine, such as searching for images and the photo organizer Picasa, and it has expanded into webmail with its Gmail service. There's also the local computer search utility for Windows users and the Deskbar, a utility that lets you search from within any application. Is a G-browser in the works? Well, Google has already snapped up the domain name gbrowser.com.

The promise of a Google browser would undoubtedly be the clean interface similar to its search engine. It would be an immediately recognizable brand, would be easy to use, and wouldn't muck up the inner workings of your computer. At least that's the theory -- or the rumor. Mozilla's Gecko rendering engine is just one open-source possibility. Another is KHTML, which is used for Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) Safari browser, as well as OmniWeb and Konqueror.
A G-browser would be able to tie in all of Google's offerings in a single, neat package: Gmail, Froogle, Blogger, and search. Would instant messaging be far off? The possibilities seem endless and would vault Google well beyond Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) or AOL (NYSE: TWX).
Whether it could ultimately supplant Internet Explorer as the premier Web browser is open to speculation. Yet there are plenty of people who are looking for someone -- anyone -- to offer a viable, competing product. There have been pretenders to the throne before. Does Google have the wherewithal to wear the crown?"

"Does Google have the wherewithal to wear the crown?"

NO :!:

Oh, unless they intend on producing an OS also.

Oh, and then they need to convice Dell, HP/Compaq, Gateway, etc. to drop their lucrative license agreement with Microsoft.

Sorry Google. I know you made all that money with your bloated IPO, but the 1.6 billion (Or whatever it was you raised) doesn't come close to Microsoft's worth. Bill G's weekend bungalo is prob worth more than Google's IPO

To Google: You are a SEARCH ENGINE! Instead of trying to be a Yahoo! or a Microsoft, why not fix your SEARCH ENGINE! first?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&a...mp;btnG=Search
And I just love that HIGHLY RELEVANT paid listing to the right

Firefox is making a reputation for being Clean, Quick, Secure, Configurable, Stable , etc. In fact it is just about everything good that IE is bad. The version 1.0 Preview Release was released a few days ago and in about 7 days the number of Downloads had reached 1.3 million against its target of 1 million in 10 days.

This demonstrates that the world of knowledgeable surfers are desperate for a configurable browser designed for Browsing without the security bugs that have ALWAYS been part of IE.

If a Brand Leader like Google had launched such a Browser, there would have been a serious challenge to the market dominance that Microsoft has enjoyed since it effectively saw off Netscape about 5 years ago.

1.3 million worldwide? That's not even a blimp on the radar.

Right now, Netscape has about 1.5% of the browser market share. That's good.

If GODoogle launches a browser, and it comes anywhere close to 5% of the market share, my guess is there will be a new, "Update" to Windows. I guess then we'll see how well that GODoogle browser works with a Microsoft Windows platform

Again, while Google holds the hype (Hype goes away), Microsoft will always be holding the cards, until someone can better market a new OS.

gBrowser has been up and running for some time. The most current version available is 1.5 beta 22.

I didn't see Google mentioned in that link. Plus it was a, "mac.com" link. And they're trying to peddle it as, "eternal youth" for $10

Are you sure this has anything to do with Google.

Google needs to keep working on gmail before they do anything else.

They will not be the #1 search engine for much longer. Using that fame to get other things started I think is a good idea.
