I think you made the right choice with vBulletin. phpBB and SMF are decent free alternatives, but if you're serious about your forum - vB is the way to go!

In terms of security, modifications, support and just down right style, I think it blows the others away.

Vbulletin is good, but I still like phpbb as it is free and there are thousands of free modifications for it. My forum uses phpbb and at one point I thought about switching to vbulletin as it generates search engine friendly url's but then I found a modification that generates seo friendly url's in phpbb.

I have had a few installed from here- ( I would tell you but the forum software won't let me until I have 10 posts) :doh2:

Their mods have helped my site quite a lot, particularly my forum.

The most users ever online on my forum was 240ish and after having these mods installed it is 743.

There are quite a few good mods on there and the members are really helpful.

At first I had 11,000 url's in google but many of these were duplicates and contained session id's. After the mods were installed I have about 4,000 pages in google, but no duplicates.

I'd much rather have 4,000 well indexed pages then 100,000 poorly indexed pages.

You'll have to wait till I get 10 posts before I can show you the mods

I have 10 post now!

I got the mods for the search engine friendly url's from here- SEO Forums : Google Yahoo MSN

They have some really good mods and there are some very clever people on there who specialise in SEO and .htaccess etc.

Have to agree about phpBB. I've been using it on one forum for nearly five years now.

It started out as a forum about getting free samples but has grown into a more general forum.
