vBulletin is too expensive. I am using SMF for Webmasters Phorum - Index currently, works great for me. I have already used SMF for Bismika Allahuma Discussion Forum - Index in the past, so it is no real stranger to me.

If I actually had money to put into it, vB would be the only one that I would consider.

But since I have no money, SMF was my first choice. But we had problems with the installation of SMF, so I ended up with phpBB 3.0. And it is much better than expected. And it's very pretty! The only real complaint that I have is that any customization is a PITA, or so I have been told by the people doing the customizations.

But this is my first forum and I really have nothing to compare it to.

For SMALL forums especially attached to blogs bbPress is a good choice.

I also quite like Vanilla for the 'open-source' clean feel it has about it.

Vb seems the most secure. Phpbb2 was a pain, so I got rid of my spam ridden site. I am starting to use SMF, but only in the last few weeks, so I'll get back to you about them...
