Default domain name extension for Scotland?

There is a debate at Nominet email list at the moment for people who want a new domain extension .sco.uk created. Some people are for it, others are again.

Please vote in this poll to register you opinion.

Thanks

I seriously don't see the point. .co.uk does a fine job as it is. It will just be another useless ext.

Just like the .ltd.uk etc etc.

Same here KP, I think its pointless, if Scotland succeeds, then Wales will want an extension, and Norther Ireland as well, then the English will fell left out and want .eng.uk and what would be the point of .co.uk ?

You know what? I seriously, in the future can see something really stupid happening like a list of ext for every single state in the US and Great Britain having ext like....

.eng
.wal
.sco
.ni
.si

It would be totally stupid if that happened but if nominet and/or ICANN get there way thats what would happen.

I always thought the idea was to simplify the internet..

Temi, KingPin,

I'm a proud Scot, but I have to agree with you on this one. BARKING MAD.

I read somewhere that it could only be used for gaelic and scottish sites, which is a nice idea but unworkable.

Nevertheless, it's a case of "me too!". The fact is that .cat was set up to represent Catalan culture, then why can't .sco be used for scottish domain names (and then, as temi said, us Welsh would want one with .cym, and so on and so forth).

I think it will happen, purely because .cat domains are out there. Personally I think it's another way for domain registrants to make money (I read that .cat was pushed through by a Spanish domain host due to client's reluctance to us .es).

I notice nobody really has a problem with .co.uk (I certainly don't, I use them all the time). I can imagine it'll be used for people who are overly patriotic and domain squatters (like with .asia).

That being said, I would probably get a few .cym's if they come on the market

Don't see a problem ... sites are about content not TLD's...

There's already a campaign for the Welsh .cym TLD
