I dont see the point in chasing backlinks anymore. Links count will never pay the bills and the chance of those links being visited by buyers are slim.

You got to look where these links are placed. These links are from lists, directory lists - the directories are worthless, untargeted and of such low traffic, youll never see anything from them.

These directories charge hefty prices for these links usually from £10 to £70, but they never deliver. £20 a link for a untargeted and trafficless website is too much to pay.

You'll lose your cash and fail doing this.

Surely if the directories have a good google PR rateing then they are visited by the search engines and should pick up the back links?

You can have all the backlinks and visitors in the world - it doesnt mean a thing. If the trust between buyer and seller isnt there, you can't make any money.

Backlinks are worthless unless it converts to a sale.

Thanks guys for sharing the list of UK directories. Can you also add some some UK based social networking sites?

Nothing General in nature - the return of visitors from these links wont be there.

Real searchers don't visit webmaster directories anyway, its only webmasters that do - simply buying links from other directory sellers or checking to see if the link they exchanged is still active and not been removed. Directory traffic is pointless traffic that will never convert for real businesses.

Suggest you look for targeted links, and if you must use a search engine type site, then ensure its niche.
