That budget is okay if you buy your first DSLR, but if you are advanced, that money is not enough. See if you can find a Canon EOS D40 and later on to buy some nice lens. Or you can also try a Canon Rebel XTi 400d, its cheaper but you have some small disadvantages.

You can also try Nikon but I cannot give you any help on this one, I have never tested any...

i would recommend the canon 400d it is a great dslr.
nikon would be my second pick.

but canon had a cashback action going on this moment.

I have the Nikon D50, I moved from an N70 (American F70) I imprted my cameras from the States form Camera King, but you can get nice deals on Ebay NIKON D50 DIGITAL SLR CAMERA 6MP - D 50 WITH 18-55 LENS on eBay, also, Digital Cameras, Photography (end time 07-Jan-08 20:09:30 GMT) for example.

I swapped as it meant I could use my autofocus lenses from my film camera I would highly recommend this camera to you, as unless you are a pro, it will be all you need.

I use it for everything from hill walking portraits, and sports photography with ease. ABSOLUTELY no shutter delay either!

buy a canon EOS 350D and use the money you saved to buy a really good lens. The kit lenses are awful but the 350D is faster than the 400D.

Canon 40D, worth the wait until your budget will stretch to it because of the the "Live Feed" if nothing else plus it's CMOS at 10mp and more............

350D because it fits in my handbag! Though a 40D probably would too just cos of the size of my bag!

40D is not a handbag camera, it would part of a DSLR outfit with several lenses, decent flash etc. Apart from that, it is of a "Prosumer" metal construction and probably toooooo heavy for girly handbags even yours I supect xhan.
