WordPress Theme sponsorship does it work?

There seem to be a big business in wordpress them footer link sponsorship going on at DP.
Has any one here sponsored WP footer link, has it been worth it?

Ive done it before didnt see great results but it does give a steady backlink everynow and then, i think you just have to find a template that is going to be good, one with a nice design etc.

I'm thinking of using this method and sponsoring few good looking themes but before that I would like to know from people who have sponsored themes, how much has it helped them?

Don't know much about benefit of sponsoring WP themes but one has to take extra care after sponsoring themes. Have a look

Personal experience says it is a sheer waste of time and money.
We have WP themes available for free download only at our site.
There is only a designer link to our site in place of footer.
It is fairly simple - if anybody removes it when using our themes then we contact them, if that fails then we contact their host about stolen property!

I did it once and did not notice any major results. Matt Cutts has stated that Google does not approve of them, so I would not think they are worth much.
