Adwords is defanitely good way to get some decent traffic. Avoid content network in the beginning. Make sure on page quality score is high for the main keyword you are bidding. If your site is about camera's and you are bidding for cheese, they may ding you with higher cost as the site and content is not relevant.

Start with small budget and low bids and see if that makes any sense.

Some domain reseller programs offer $75.00 adwords credit and the reseller programs costs you less than that... so You decide, Here is link of reseller program I am using: Domain59.com.

If you are selling some service or affiliate offer, read thru blog posts of shoe maker and Amit mehta and look for their posts about ppc experiments.

Adwords can be used with great success but as people have said it can run away if not kept in control,Miva is another one that i am using also at the moment.Adwords is the best to get initial revenue coming in quicker though.
