tip 1. It depends on the contest. Some of them i agree are short term and have little impact on the websites popularity and visibility. But there are some ways to make the most out of the contest. For example Marketing Pilgrim gets every year they held a competition fresh articles for their website. They make SEO more popular and it's for good for all of us who are in the industry. They get the interest they want, the prizes are better every year and that kind of contest makes sense and brings good things to both sides, the organizing body and contestants.
tip 2. "why give something away that is a tool in your arsenal" - i may ask why Google gives out so many great tools for free even if they know they could get millions of dollars on each software alone? They make people "addicted" to their software. They make the circle of dependence wider among different industries. That way they reach more clients and make even more money. The same thing with SEO software for example. If you give it out for free you will make people use it and become familiar with it. They will use it for many years to come if its good enough. And they will come back to use your service, and even if its on other website you get a link back.
tip 3. "101 list", tips & tricks, top 10 lists get real traffic. I can not count the keywords through which i came across SEOmoz "Google Search Engine Ranking Factors".
tip 4. "Submit articles to news sites" - good articles get around the net very fast, reaching many people, also potential clients. By submitting them to the news and article sites we show our care for customer, our activeness toward them and we also let know our competitors we are not asleep, we are working hard for our success. And it is possible to get a targeted traffic from well optimized articles.
tip 5. Links from .org domains count when it comes to PageRank calculations. The fact that it is not a relevant website (non-profit organization) to the topic of our website doesn't mean it can't bring positive impact on our site's rankings.
tip 6. I'm not even trying to promote my own website or services by this post. All I'm trying to do right now is to reach many people with my words about SEO, get feedback and get more ideas for the future. I agree that the fact I'm not an active member of this forum and i post a link to my article on another website is not the most polite way to gain trust and i have no excuse for that.
Thanks for your time to read my article and for your opinions. I'm looking forward to hearing more thoughts on this subject from you.
