Default Warning: This laptop’s data will self-destruct in 5,4,3…

Virtuity, a company from UK, has developed a “self-destruct” software that can destroy all data stored on laptops. The software named Backstopp monitors the laptop to determine it’s location, and if the laptop is moved without acknowledgement Backstopp is activated and destroys important data.
From this technology will benefit first the companies that do wish their laptops who are carrying important data to have a movement limitation in an office,a floor or a building.

The software seems to use US Department of Defence standards to destroy those datas, it’s not relying on Internet connection and it integrates a secure online backup service to reload your data on other devices.

Securing a laptop will cost somewhere around 10Pound/month and Virtuity said that data must be encrypted in any case.

This could be a cheap and good method to protect your informations, even though it seems that laptops are being stolen first for their value and rarely for the data that its contain. If it happens that your laptop to be stolen, using Backstopp will prevent the illicit use of it’s datas.
