I'd like to add one thing to this list and it is something that everybody should consider for the future as it is indeed the way engines are starting to go and will deffinately play a big factor in future SEO.

Get links from sites with the same theme as your own. As mentioned above, links from directories are not enough. You really need to be thinking about themed linking and it can often be the key between making the top 10 or not.
